  • Time to hang it up?

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about hanging up my career as a blogger. It’s something that’s been a part of my life since 2003, when blogging was essentially online journaling and less of a “trend,” if you want to call it that.

Blogging holds a special place in my heart. Writing has always been an outlet for me. It’s cathartic to sit down and type out your thoughts, opinions, emotions – on any subject that might tickle your fancy (do people still say that?).

When I started SkydiveChick.com in 2009 it was because I was incredibly passionate about the sport – and I still am to this day. I wanted to share it with the world. I wanted this site to be a destination for anyone interested in hearing about skydiving from someone who does it on a regular basis. It was, and continues to be, as I get about an email a week from people who stumble upon the blog and want to know more about the sport. It’s heartwarming to know that I have inspired others to jump into this sport (no pun intended), or provided guidance to students and other fun jumpers in the sport – it’s also quite flattering. *Blushes*

Of course, that was never an intended purpose of the blog, but I’d be lying if I said my audience didn’t keep me coming back to write on a regular basis.

Since the birth of SkydiveChick so many changes have occurred in my life – I graduated AFF, started traveling to boogies, switched from RW to freeflying, met my husband, started wingsuiting, moved to Chicago, switched careers, switched dropzones, adopted a dog, got married and now I’m staring the 3rd winter since I started skydiving in the face – and let me tell you, Chicago winters are the worst. Through the whirlwind that my life has been these past two years, I can honestly say my outlook on life as well as my lifestyle has changed – and I really want my creative outlets to mesh with these changes. I’m happier than I’ve ever been and I’ve got some great goals for my near and not-so-near future, but where does blogging fit into that mix? Do I want to continue focusing on skydiving, or is it time to make SkydiveChick more of a lifestyle destination? Given that my life isn’t just about skydiving, shouldn’t my blog reflect that?

One thing that hasn’t changed is my desire to write. With my daily commute via public transportation I’ve been lucky to have extra time (not spent behind the wheel every morning and evening) to do some reading, which actually makes me want to write more. However, with everything that’s changed, I find my time for blogging just isn’t as available as it once was. Which brings me to my dilemma – to write or not to write.

I’ve taken quite a few weeks off, as you’ve likely noticed, but it’s been much needed. I still must admit that I’m unsure if I’ll be returning to blogging at SkydiveChick on a regular basis, or if this return will be short lived. I guess it’ll depend on how this feels – because as much as I love knowing that my writing is benefiting others, I have to think about what that means for my writing as a creative outlet. If I find that my return to the blogoshere continues to be a mutually beneficial experience, then you can count on my regular blogs posts once again. If it becomes a burden on my creativity, then you might just have to settle for Twitter updates and the occasional witty Facebook post. Of course, if I do start to disappear again, you might just find more of my work over on my Flickr page.

I guess we’ll just have to see where life takes me.

    Blue skies!

  • Slacker

I’ve been a total slacker when it comes to my blog – not that there’s not good reason for it, but I’m not here to make excuses.

Truth is, even though I’m super busy these days, that’s never stopped me before. I’m sort of at a loss for what to talk about.

This has been a strange skydiving season for me, with the wingsuit training and now I’m back enjoying freeflying again. I’ve recently turned my focus to others, rather than my own improvement, as I help friends stick their sits and quit backsliding.

I have to admit, I do love helping people find that freeflying sweet spot, so to speak. And no, that doesn’t change my perspective on wanting to get my ratings to instruct. This is still my weekend hobby after all, and I’m more than happy to pay for my slot and help others work out their kinks. It’s satisfying and incredibly enjoyable.

Other than that, life has been a whirlwind, between work, moving and planning an incredibly special event. Part of me fears that I’ll be a bit bored after October, but hopefully I’ll get a welcomed vacation shortly there after :)

Recently I’ve been reading a blog written by a fellow skydiver who is currently deployed in the military. He’s chronicling his accounts as a military surgeon, it’s incredibly interesting but I have to say it gives me a bit of writers block. Not so much in the traditional sense but I’m at a loss for words on how to write some frivolous skydiving blog post after reading about the intense life experiences he’s currently enduring. It’s humbling – to say the least – as a human being and as a writer.

If you’re interested, here’s a link to his blog.

    Blue ones!

  • Random Midnight Fodder

So I’m up late, waiting on an announcement to come through for one of my clients, what a better time to blog than now, huh?

Honestly, I’m not sure where this post is going to take me, it very well may be random as my brain tends to be all over the place this time of night, so bear with me. I’ll try to stick to skydiving at the very least :)

This weekend Rick and I took a trip out to CSC again. I was finally able to get up in the air with Ms. Sydney for a couple of attempted hybrids. Yes, you read that correctly, couple = 2, attempted = failed. We’re not going to get into the nitty gritty of it – truthfully, we’re not entirely sure what the problem was that was making us not get our act together – but needless to say it was still a skydive and it as still a wicked awesome time. Great flying with you love!

It was nice to do some more freeflying with Doug and Carolyn while I was out there too. Doug was giving us both some great head down instruction, working on exits with flower grips and just getting the feel for the position right out of the plane. After a couple jumps and video reviews things really started to make sense to us! It’s fun flying with these two, can’t wait to get out there again!

I must admit that I was a little envious after Rick did a wingsuit jump Saturday evening. I considered it on Sunday before we left, but the schedule just didn’t permit. Now I’m kinda jonesing for some flight time…that’ll have to be in my near future :) .

Sad to say that summer is almost officially over. But, there’s still so much season left to enjoy, and so much to look forward to!

    • This weekend we’re heading to the Work Stinks! Boogie at Start Skydiving in Middleton, OH. This was mine and Rick’s first boogie together last year so we’ve got fond memories of the jumps that were made and the experiences had. I’m excited to be going back this year. I’m sure there will be lots of photos and video to share when I return next week!
    • At the end of the month we’re heading to California for what originally started as a trip to visit family who lives in LA, and is now also a trip to Elsinore for the Chick’s Rock boogie. Looking forward to meeting up with some jumpers I’ve been meaning to get in the sky with for quite some time. Hopefully I’ll be able to convince some of my cousins to jump out of a perfectly good airplane with me that weekend ;)

Let’s see, what else? Oh yeah, I’m selling my Sabre 1 – 150. Anyone need one? It’s in great condition, just over 300 jumps on it, new oversize slider (and regular size slider) come with it. Slinks. With the oversize slider it’s never slammed me…in fact, it snivels! And it’s purdy…

Going to post on DZ.com soon, but wanted to throw it out there to the readers first. Email me if you’re interested: theskydivechick@gmail.com.

Okay, so enough rambling, it’s back to work for me. Still working on a fun Jump for Diabetes video I hope to share in the near future, so stay tuned for that.

  • The Skydiver Diet with PhytoBurst

A couple weeks back I was contacted by this awesome chick Suji who had recently spent some time in the tunnel. Bad ass!

Apparently she came across my blog and noticed a couple posts about the “skydiver diet,” as I like to refer to my inability to eat and skydive. I don’t recommend this, it’s unhealthy and honestly very unsafe to let yourself get low on fuel during a sport like skydiving.

Adrenaline will only take you so far before you hit the floor from lack of energy.

So she recognized the need here and suggested I give these little nutritional chews a try. They’re called PhytoBurst (sold by my friends over at Guaranteed Wellness), and as the name suggests, they pack a HUGE nutritional punch.

    PhytoPacket

As I passed on lunch at the dropzone, I remembered that I had these chews to try out instead. They certainly don’t fill you up, but that’s not the point – at least, not for me. The last thing I want is a heavy meal sitting in my stomach as I’m plummeting to the Earth at 140 mph working on my freefly skills.

But the typical dip in energy I experience on a day without lunch nearly disappeared thanks to these little jems. And they are freakin’ tasty! As I was eating the mixed-berry flavor the other day I was trying to put my finger on the flavor; it’s like Flintstones Vitamins without the chalky texture.

    These things are THE BOMB!

Check out what they have to offer:

    PhytoNutrients

I even gave them a try yesterday as I was sitting at my desk, busting away on the never ending pile of work, realizing I didn’t have time to eat lunch. One chew got me through the afternoon without feeling like I was going to pass out on my keyboard.

So they’re certainly not just for athletes, though I recommend them for anyone who is training. They sure beat that disgusting power gel in the packets. And they’re gluten-free! With a best friend who’s a glutard (cute little pet name, eh?) this one hits close to home.

Thanks, Suji, for recommending PhytoBurst. These will be a dropzone staple from here on out! Give ‘em a try, y’all. If you’re interested in getting your own free sample, check out their website or let me know and I’ll hook you up!

  • Stress and the Skydiver

    IMG_0841*Photo by Lonnie Kirk (from a C-185)

Over the course of the season I’ve found that my stress levels are significantly lower throughout the week after a weekend filled with skydiving.

It’s a perfect inverse relationship – the more altitude in my life, the less stress. Ask any jumper, they’re likely to confirm this statement.

Though I will admit, the more skydiving I do on the weekends, the more I crave it throughout the week. Unless I’m lucky enough to squeeze in a weekday jump – hell, even if I have made a hump-day jump or two – I’m practically twitching in my seat come Friday, needing my adrenaline fix.

There’s something about opening the caravan door (or otter, or porter) at 13,000 feet, smelling the clean, crisp air, and flying with your freefly partner (or RW crew, if you’re into that sort of thing).

There’s no better release than that.

Picture 2*Still taken from video by Richard Simenc. Prepping for a two-man rodeo.

Talk about living in the moment – as you plummet at speeds upwards of 140+ mph, all you have to focus on is what’s going on in that minute of freefall. There’s no worries at all. Work, your to-do list, issues with friends and family, all that gets sucked out the door at altitude.

Under canopy, you’re completely at peace; reflecting on the preceding skydive, adrenaline still pumping through your body – it’s the ultimate alone time.

Of course, where I found the most tranquility was on my helicopter jump – which is essentially the same feeling as a BASE, jumping into still air (though with significantly more altitude involved) – which you may remember from my post on the Work Stinks boogie a couple months back.

I’ve heard hot air balloon jumps are even more peaceful than the helicopter, what without the sound of the blades above your head. I will soon find out as I do my first balloon jump tomorrow with friends Bryan and Landon and my freefly partner Rick.

Fingers crossed for beautiful weather and Blue Skies!

  • I’d Rather be Skydiving

It’s been a while since I’ve written one of these posts; mainly because I’ve spent all my free time jumping this summer and haven’t done much else. What can I say, I’m a lucky girl!

Unfortunately, the weather hasn’t cooperated much these past couple weekends, what with fall arriving at a much faster clip than I’d prefer. Don’t get me wrong, I love the fall. So long as it’s sunny and the weather is jumpable. There’s always a catch, isn’t there?

It’s been difficult going two weekends without skydiving. This weekend some friends and I even headed down to a local dropzone – after hearing that the plane was grounded at our home DZ – without a single jump to show for it. Sad, really.

Luckily, I slipped in a jump last Thursday when the weather was perfect! It was a fun freefly jump with friends Nick and Rick.

We did a three man rolling train, releasing once stable and transitioning into a sit. (Turn up the audio if you want to hear some fun commentary on the ride up.)

Nick is on the bottom with me in the middle and Rick on top (shooting video for us).

This was the only jump of the day as the sun was already setting once we packed up. Still having a hard time getting used to these shorter days.

  • Aerodyne Demos and Freeflying

    clouds

If you live in my neck of the woods and you looked skyward this weekend, it may have seemed like a bust for us skydivers, but for me, that couldn’t be farther from the truth.

Saturday morning I got up bright and early to make the trip up to Skydive Tecumseh to take advantage of the Aerodyne demo tour that was in town. With the consistent cloud cover throughout the day, the Cessna was only running hop & pops, but that was sufficient for canopy demos.

    AerodynePartsLogo

Though don’t get me wrong, I would have loved a couple trips up to 14,000 in the Otter, but for the purpose of testing out the Pilot, I was completely content with what we got.

When I arrived, I headed straight over to the reps to get myself a rig and canopy to demo. Naturally, we ran into the issue that I’m a small girl with a low number of jumps. So they had rigs that would fit with canopies that were way too small to even consider jumping, or canopies that would fit into a smaller rig, but then the reserve is entirely too small.

But, with some quick thinking and innovation, the Aerodyne team put together a rig for me to test out. I was happily able to jump an Icon with a Pilot 188. It was a great ride. Still a bit too big for real excitement under canopy, but it got me to the ground safely and smoothly, which is all I can hope for at this point.

Now, I’ve always been a huge fan of the Pilot. It packs easy – well, at least the one’s I’ve packed before – and opens comfortably. It flies flatter than some of the other canopies I’ve tried out in the past (you know, those 10+ different rigs you jump as a student) giving me time to get back from a long spot or just to play around a little longer and still know I’ll get back to my target.

I also learned that the Pilots tend to react better to turbulence than some of the other canopies on the market, too. A huge plus for me!

It definitely looks like I’ll be purchasing a Pilot in the near future. After this hop & pop and the great customer service of the Aerodyne folks, I’m sold!

Once it appeared that the clouds were just not going to cooperate, the rest of Saturday was spent back on the road to Cleveland so I could get home and rest up for a big Sunday.

Sunday morning I was back on the road to Canton Air Sports for my friend Rick’s 200th jump. The weather wasn’t looking so great for us this day, either.

I sat around the drop zone for a few hours, watching BASE jumping videos with the other regulars, while trying to will the clouds away. Just as I was about to leave we got word that the weather was clearing from the North. So I stuck around. After all, I didn’t drive all that way to miss Rick’s 200th.

Around 5:30 we were able to get into the air. Rick decided on a shirtless, shoeless hybrid (him, not me), with our buddy Tod doing outside video for us. So we piled out of the Cessna-182, with me and Nick as the linked base, and Rick hanging from our chest straps.

hybrid*Photo courtesy of Bill Ramey. Thanks Bill.

This is what our hybrid looked like!

The exit was flawless – except that Tod couldn’t see Rick’s count and ended up shooting video a little higher above us than expected. Nick and I kept a steady base from which Rick hung straight down. He even kicked his leg out for a bit and put us into a fun little spin. We broke off at 4,000 and met up back on the ground to celebrate Rick’s accomplishment.

So glad I got to be a part of your 200th, bud!

Thinking that was going to be the last of the day, I finished logging the jump and packed up my stuff. Naturally, I was convinced to get on the sunset load – really, who can pass that up – and headed back up for a three-way with Rick and Tod.

We were going to do the hybrid again, with me in the hanging position, but changed our plans on the ride to altitude. Instead, Rick and I did a train with a rolling exit. This was my first true freefly attempt – yes, I know, beer – and was a little bummed when it didn’t go exactly as planned. But we did manage to exit smoothly and stay linked for about 4,000 feet until we spun apart.

With a little post-jump coaching on the ground I completely understand how it should have worked to get us vertical. Next time we’ll get it!

And yes, I did mention that video was taken on both of these. As soon as they are in my possession I’ll be sure to post them. With three jumps, I definitely made the best of what otherwise would be seen as a cloudy, gloomy weekend.

    Blue skies!
